The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is pleased to offer an opportunity for artists of all disciplines to participate in its new online workshop series that is themed around topics covered in The Profitable Artist (Allworth Press, 2018). The “Copyright 101” workshop will be presented by lawyer Elissa D. Hecker, who contributed to the legal chapters in The Profitable Artist, on Tuesday, November 20, 6:30 PM – 8:00 PM EST.
Workshop Description
As a creator, it is important to be able to make a living from the hard work you devote to your original works of authorship. You should have the right to control what others can and cannot do with your works, with a few exceptions. Often, however, the legal and business aspects of what to do with art before, during, and after it is created will depend on copyright law. A creator’s copyrights are part of a bundle from which an artist can, among other things, license, sell, transfer, and/or assign, any number of rights to another. This workshop will provide an introduction to the basics of U.S. Copyright law and highlight types of licensing and the fair use defense. If you create, use, appropriate, produce, or commission, then this workshop is for you!

Presenter
Elissa D. Hecker practices in the fields of copyright, trademark, and business law. Her clients encompass a large spectrum of the entertainment and corporate worlds. Hecker has been repeatedly named to the Top 25: Westchester County Super Lawyers List. She is also the recipient of the IP Excellence Award for Best Trademark Attorney of 2018 (New York) and the Copyright Society of the U.S.A.’s (CSUSA) inaugural Excellent Service Award. In addition to her private practice, Hecker is a Past Chair of the New York State Bar Association’s (NYSBA) Entertainment, Arts and Sports Law (EASL) Section; Co-Chair and creator of EASL’s Pro Bono Committee; Chair of the Board of Directors at Dance/NYC; and a member and former Trustee of the Copyright Society of America (CSUSA). Hecker is editor of the EASL journal and blog and an Assistant Editor and member of the Board of Editors for the Journal of the CSUSA. She also co-edited the books Entertainment Litigation – Know the Issues and Avoid the Courtroom, Counseling Content Providers in the Digital Age, and In the Arena: A Sports Law Handbook, all published by the New York State Bar Association.
