Nadja Verena Marcin’s OPHELIA is an intricate and architectural live performance and video sculpture that invites the audience to re-imagine Ophelia as a rebel meme for climate change and emotional power. It questions the role that humans play in the destruction of the biosphere. The solo exhibition and live performance will be held tomorrow, Saturday, March 3 at 4:00 PM PST at the Minnesota Street Project (1275 Minnesota Street, San Francisco, CA 94107). RSVP here to attend. Marcin will also lead a workshop titled “OPHELIA: REBEL MEME TO SYSTEMS OF POWER AND OPPRESSION” from Friday, March 16 – Sunday, March 18, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM (PST), at The Growlery (235 Broderick Street, San Francisco, CA 94117).
Laura Shapiro will perform a new solo piece, “Last Gasp! (First Draft),” at the BAAD!ASS Women’s Festival on Friday, March 9 at 8:00 PM at the Bronx Academy of Arts & Dance (2474 Westchester Avenue, Bronx, NY 10461). “Last Gasp (First Draft)” considers personal, end-of-life preparations within a perspective of possible planetary apocalypse and/or exhaustion through mordant humor, talking, movement, video projections, and colorful costumes.
Parthenia with guest Ryland Angel (tenor and counter-tenor), will perform the world premiere of Martin Kennedy’s “Tomb Sonnets,” along with fascinating music from the 16th and 17th-centuries on Sunday, March 25 at 4:00 PM at The Secret Theatre (44-02 23rd Street, Long Island City, Queens 11101). Congratulations to Debi Cornwall for receiving a visual arts grant from Harpo Foundation. Cornwall is a Brooklyn-based conceptual documentary artist who marries empathy and dark humor with systemic critique while interrogating American state power in the post-9/11 era.
“Notes from the Field,” the performance portion of Anna Deavere Smith’s Fiscally Sponsored “Pipeline Project,” premiered on HBO on February 24. The HBO Film presentation dramatizes accounts of students, parents, teachers, and administrators caught in America’s school-to-prison pipeline, which pushes underprivileged, minority youth out of the classroom and into incarceration. A one-month free trial of HBO NOW is available to all new customers.
