The New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) will host an evening workshop for Mandarin-speaking artists on Monday, May 8, 2017, from 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM. It will be the first time this professional development workshop from NYFA will be delivered in Mandarin.

The workshop will provide a brief overview covering topics which connect artists as entrepreneurs, including law, finance, strategic planning, fundraising, marketing, and networking. Participants will be introduced to the “Action Plan” and Business Model Canvas as a blueprint for their future projects, career, and business goals. Artists will also be introduced to SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats ) Analysis, a tool that can provide strategic support to their artistic career, and will have the chance to work through the exercise with fellow participants.

The workshop is derived from the Artist As Entrepreneur Boot Camp, a program that first began in 2010 with funding by the New York City Economic Development Corporation. The Boot Camp earned rave reviews from participants and generated significant interest from the wider community. These Boot Camp courses teach the fundamental principles of sustainability—and ultimately profitability—in the arts, and include workshops on finance, law, marketing, and fundraising. Participants work through a flexible and dynamic “Action Plan,” which provides a blueprint for their future projects, career, and business goals. Each receives specific feedback from experts in the field as well as their peers in the course.

Presenter’s Bio

Judy Cai is Program Officer of NYFA Learning/Asian Affairs at New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA). She facilitates various professional development programs at NYFA, such as entrepreneurial boot camps and the Immigrant Artist Mentoring Program, to better serve individual artists. With a strong interest in arts and cultural exchange, Cai also manages a number of NYFA’s China programs, and conducts outreach to local Asian artist communities. Since 2013, she has led three intensive professional development training programs for Chinese arts administrators and curators in the United States. She is also the Chief Representative in the United States for the Shanghai Interactive Festival of Theatre (SHIFT), the only festival focused on interactive theatre and arts and technology in Mainland China.

Prior to NYFA, Cai was the Outreach Coordinator at the Flushing Council on Culture and the Arts. To become a strong advocate of a global arts exchange and to gain extensive experiences in international communications, Judy also worked at Christie’s, Dance/USA, and Shanghai International Arts Festival. Originally from Shanghai, Judy Cai has a MA in Arts Management from Carnegie Mellon University, a BS in Culture and Arts Management, and a Bachelor of Law, from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

This program is supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) in partnership with the City Council. We are grateful to Council Member Stephen Levin for his support.
