NYFA Source Round-Up: Opportunities for Crafts Artists
There’s great variety among Crafts artists; some sew or weave while others weld or carve.
The application for the 2016-2017 cycle of the NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellowship Program is now open, with a deadline of Wednesday, January 25, 2017 at 11:59 PM (EST). One category that will be reviewed is Crafts/Sculpture, which encapsulates work in all forms of craft including ceramics, glass, wood, metal, fiber, textiles, and mixed media. Work in all forms of sculpture, including kinetic works and installations, is also accepted. Both conceptual and traditional work is appropriate. Learn more about the guidelines here.
There’s great variety among Crafts artists; some sew or weave while others weld or carve. Most, though, share a common appreciation for the tactility of their craft. As Emily Barletta (Fellow in Crafts/Sculpture ‘09) expressed in an interview with the Fiber Studio:
I love the tactility of the sewing. I like to make stitches and then run my hands across the paper and play pretend that I am making drawings for the blind (an idea I stole from Constantin Brancusi who made sculptures for the blind).

Searching with NYFA Source
To find the next perfect award or residency to add to your application calendar, as well as helpful artist services, take the tutorial on How to Use NYFA Source, or jump right in with the NYFA Source Search page. Try a variety of searches, selecting “Next” at the bottom of the page after choosing each criterion. Here’s an example:
- Award type: “Cash Grants/Monetary Awards”
- Discipline: “Visual Arts”
- Subdiscipline: “Crafts,” “Ceramics,” or “Fiber,” etc.
- Filter the search further using criteria like Location or Career Point, or choose “Search Now”
