The latest from NYFA Affiliated Artists who are making their mark both at home and abroad.

From Asia Contemporary Art Week (Sponsored Project) to NYSCA/NYFA Artist Fellow Judith Sloan’s upcoming performance of Off the Record, November is filled with many opportunities to see the work of NYFA Affiliated Artists and projects. Things to do & see in NYC:

Roxa Smith (Fellow in Painting ‘12)
Smith’s paintings will be featured in a group exhibition titled HOME: Function/Dysfunction/Make Believe.
When: Exhibition: October 31 – December 1, 2016; Opening Reception: November 2, 2016, 6:00–8:00 PM
Where: The Hewitt Gallery at Marymount Manhattan College, 221 East 71 Street, Manhattan, New York 10021

Jen Bervin (Fellow in Poetry ‘07)
Bervin is participating in the BRIC Biennial: Volume II, Bed Stuy/Crown Heights Edition, an exhibition focusing on the theme “Affective Bodies,” drawing from affect theory, which places emphasis on bodily experience rather than on learned knowledge.
When: Exhibition: November 10, 2016 – January 15, 2017; Opening Reception: November 9, 2016 from 7:00–9:00 PM
Where: Bervin’s work will be shown at the BRIC House (647 Fulton Street, Brooklyn, NY 11217) while many other participating artists will exhibit at Weeksville Heritage Center, the main branch of the Brooklyn Public Library, and FiveMyles.

Dread Scott (Fellow in Sculpture ‘01, Performance Art/Multidisciplinary Work ’05, Interdisciplinary Work ‘12)
Scott will be featured in Smack Mellon’s 20th Anniversary Show, a large exhibition of 90+ works by artists who have participated in their Artist Studio Program.
When: Exhibition: November 12 – December 31, 2016; Opening Reception: November 12, 2016 from 6:00– 9:00 PM

Amy Bennett (Fellow in Painting ‘06, ‘10)
Bennett will be part of a group show featuring artists who have participated in Smack Mellon’s Studio Program over the past twenty years.
When: November 12 – December 31, 2016

Rosebud Ben-Oni (Fellow in Poetry ‘14)
Borders and Identity: The Poetics of Place with Rosebud Ben-Oni is a workshop running from October – November that will explore the dynamics existing within and arising out of geographical, racial, ethnic, sexual, familial, and linguistic borders. Students will write and share work, drawing inspiration from various poets such as Gwendolyn Brooks, Tara Betts, Eduardo C. Corral, Ocean Vuong, and Cornelius Eady.

Mary Ting (Fellow in Printmaking/Drawing/Artists’ Books ‘01, ‘07)
Ting has curated the exhibition ENDANGERED at John Jay College President’s Gallery. The exhibition is a call to save endangered species and features photography, prints, and sculpture by a group of international artists. View artist projects at the opening reception and stay for presentations by  Kathi Lynn Austin and Brian Gaisford.
When: November 14, 2016 – February 3, 2017; Opening Reception and Presentations: November 16, 2016 from 4:30–6:30 PM

Judith Sloan (Fellow in Music/Sound ‘13)
Sloan presents Off the Record, a new solo work of characters and stories that investigate the way people remember or mis-remember, and how we collect evidence from eyewitness accounts. Free admission with reservations suggested.

Asia Contemporary Art Week (ACAW) (Sponsored Project)
ACAW brings together leading New York and Asia-based art institutions, museums, and galleries for cutting-edge exhibitions, innovative projects, provocative dialogues, and networking opportunities.

Claudia Joskowicz (Fellow in Film / Video ‘15)
Joskowicz is participating in Enacting Stillness, an exhibition that considers the political potential of slowing down and stopping as forms of resistance, protest, and refusal. An international group of artists in the exhibition engage in practices that challenge and upend our expectations for the continuity of performative compositions, lines of movement, and thought.
When: September 21, 2016 – January 13, 2017

Dread Scott (Fellow in Sculpture ‘01, Performance Art/Multidisciplinary Work ’05, Interdisciplinary Work ‘12)
Dispatches gathers and generates artistic responses to the news by 34 contemporary artists, including Dread Scott, and photojournalists. The exhibition includes a survey of works from 2010 to present and launches a series of commissions or “dispatches” on current events and the critical issues of our time.

Bora Yoon (Fellow in Music/Sound ‘10)
Cornish College of the Arts presents SUNKEN CATHEDRAL REMIXXED, a very special evening of electronic avant machinations by duo collaboration DJ King Britt and Bora Yoon with live interactive visuals by Joshue Ott. Buy tickets HERE.

Sylvie Courvoisier (Fellow in Music / Sound ‘13)
Courvoisier embarks on a tour of Europe this November, first with Mark Feldman in Bosnia and Austria, then with Kenny Wollesen and Drew Gress on a six-stop tour. See Courvoisier’s calendar for additional information.

Orit Ben-Shitrit (Fellow in Video/Film ‘12) and Claudia Joskowicz (Fellow in Film / Video ‘15)
Ben-Shitrit is participating in the Biennial of Moving Image in Argentina. Joskowicz will also moderate a roundtable titled The Theatrics of Landscape on the work of French artist Valérie Jouve during the BIM festival.
When: BIM Festival: October 29 – November 13, 2016. Joskowicz’s roundtable will be on November 12, 2016 at 3:00 PM at Alianza Francesca de Buenos Aires.

Keliy Anderson-Staley (Fellow in Photography ‘08)
The Surface of Things, curated by Anderson-Staley, brings together a diverse group of contemporary artists who use the photogram as a starting point to pursue aesthetic and philosophical questions.

Claudia Joskowicz (Fellow in Film / Video ‘15)
Joskowicz celebrates her first solo museum exhibition in the United States in Every Building on Avenida Alfonso Ugarte—After Ruscha.

New Releases to Enjoy at Home:

Michele Brody (Fellow in Architecture/ Environmental Structures ‘00)
What: Since 2007, Brody has been serving tea to the public through the interactive community-based project Reflections in Tea. The ritual performance of preparing loose-leaf tea within special paper filters is shared with individuals and groups. Click here to see the new documentary on this project.

Annie Rachele Lanzillotto (Performance Art/Multidisciplinary Work ‘99, Nonfiction ‘14)
What: Lanzillotto’s first book of poetry is now on available on Audible. Click here to download and listen to the artists recitation of her poetry book Schistsong.

For: The above artists were selected as new members of National Academicians in 2016. Each year, the National Academy welcomes new National Academicians (NAs) who are nominated and vetted by current members, a tradition dating back to its founding in 1825. The NAs serve as ambassadors, furthering the mission to promote the fine arts in America through instruction and exhibition.
