Queen of Katwe, the latest film by director Mira Nair, premiered on Friday, September 23, and has been named a New York Times Critics’ Pick. The film, based on a book by Tim Crothers, tells the story of a young girl in Uganda who defies the odds to become a chess champion. The film stars Madina Nalwanga, David Oyelowo, and Lupita Nyong’o.
Nair is not only a NYFA Fellow (Film ‘88), but also a 2013 Hall of Fame inductee and a member of NYFA’s Board of Directors. Her previous films include Salaam Bombay!, Mississippi Masala, Monsoon Wedding, and Vanity Fair.
