March 30 Talk with Digital Artist Anne Morgan Spalter

March 30 Talk with Digital Artist Anne Morgan Spalter

The Modern Landscape: Observation & Algorithm: The creative and professional practices of digital artist Anne Morgan Spalter

Anne Morgan Spalter is a new media pioneer who founded the original digital fine art curricula at RISD and Brown in the 1990s. Her work adorns the permanent collections of the Albright-Knox Museum (Buffalo, NY), the Rhode Island School of Design Museum (Providence, RI), the Victoria & Albert Museum (London, UK), and others.

Spalter’s studio practice primarily explores the relationship between observation and algorithm. Recently, for SPRING/BREAK Art Show, Spalter shot and transformed high resolution footage of iconic New York imagery—specifically, the Manhattan skyline and Coney Island—into psychedelic, algorithmic kaleidoscopes using proprietarily coded Adobe plugins.

On March 30, Spalter will share insight into the challenges and opportunities of building a career as a digital artist, as well as a behind-the-scenes look into her own fine art practices.

About Anne Morgan Spalter

Anne Morgan Spalter explores the relationship between observation and algorithm to create modern landscapes. The resulting combinations of real and abstract, perspective and pattern, personal and universal creates a new type of landscape art.

Spalter’s modern landscapes are part of her long-standing goal of integrating art and technology. She is the author of the highly regarded and widely used text The Computer in the Visual Arts, which combines technical and theoretical aspects of the field of computer art and design.

With influences as diverse as Buddhist Art, pure mathematics, Futurism, and Action Painting, Spalter explores the modern landscape through both representational and algorithmic structures. Shooting original video in world cities and remote locales, her source video is always location-, point-of-view-, time-, and weather-specific.
