JOB ROUNDUP: GALLERY ASSISTANT
Learn How Galleries Build Relationships with Artists
Are you dreaming of working in a gallery? Perhaps you want to own a space, or you want to curate exhibitions, or work in sales? Well, becoming a gallery assistant is typically the first step in that direction. So think tons of administrative work, supporting art sales and installations at art fairs. Yes, there is a fair amount “grunt work”, however, assistants are often in a position to interact with high-level art collectors and emerging artists, which could lead to building your own professional network or other job opportunities.
Depending on the size of the gallery, you’ll often be asked to do a variety of tasks, including marketing, customer service, and artist management, which are valuable skills to take into any industry. Use the opportunity to observe how galleries build relationships with artists and keep day-to-day operations running smoothly. And as the art world continues to shift to include more regional artist-led spaces, like the Artist Volunteer Center and 440 Gallery, more opportunities will be made available!
The responsibilities of an assistant can vary depending on the size of the gallery and number of staff members. Duties may include:
- Greeting visitors and interfacing with public
- Assisting in the coordination of special exhibits
- Assisting with deliveries of artwork
- Writing about artworks and exhibitions for an audience of collectors
- Maintaining budgets on projects, generating invoices and tracking payments
