NYFA Curatorial Services and The Roger Smith Hotel present the experimental video I Believe it is a Signal by Jason Bernagozzi.
The video will be installed on the hotel’s dedicated in-room video art channel, and will play for the next two months in all 130 guest rooms in the hotel. From the Roger Smith website:
“I Believe it is a Signal is an experimental video organized as a 6-part vignette, each section revealing the control structures within the video code as it falls apart. In the spirit of Nam June Paik’s early Wobulator work, the artist uses a process that disrupts the video sequencing, making the pixels appear to rupture as it is being ripped apart. The forced reorganization and glitching bodyscapes suggest that the monumental authority of broadcast and streaming media is in fact a fragile and impermanent signal.
"Jason Bernagozzi is a video, sound and new media artist living and working in upstate New York and is a co-founder of the experimental media arts non-profit Signal Culture. His work has been featured nationally and internationally at venues such as the Signal Culture European Media Arts Festival in Osnabruk, Germany, the LOOP Video Art Festival in Barcelona, Spain, the Beyond/In Western NY Biennial in Buffalo, NY, and the Yan Gerber International Arts Festival in Hebei Province, China. His work has received several awards including grants from the New York State Council for the Arts, Wavefarm and the ARTS Council for the Southern Finger Lakes.
"The Roger Smith is a family-run hotel in Midtown Manhattan. For over 20 years the owners and staff have been committed to shaping and growing a diverse and organic cultural footprint both within the hotel and beyond. With a continued desire to converse and engage with guests, with New York and places further afield, The Roger Smith Hotel’s creative program seeks to create big opportunities, pleasurable experiences, inspiring happenings and intelligent dialogues."
