Layout Matters: 5 Tips to Ramp Up Your Resume

A resume helps prospective employers get to know you and what unique skill sets you can bring to their company. You want to state your case clearly and effectively using key words from the job description. The goal is to get past the initial bot screening and capture the attention of a recruiter or hiring manager. Indeed notes that on average employers look at resumes for 6-7 seconds, so you’ve got to make an impact quickly!

1. Is your current job relevant? Make sure that the most relevant work experience is first. If you’re a recent graduate or changing careers, have a section for “Relevant Work Experience” followed by “Additional Work Experience.”

2. Your “Relevant Work Experience” and your “Additional Work Experience” sections should each tell a story in reverse chronological order. It is an overview of your accomplishments that highlights how you have reached your current position.

3. If more than 1-2 years have passed since you graduated from a degree program, do not put your education first on your resume. Lead with your work experience.

4. Including a “Skills” section? If so, order your skills according to the list of requirements on the job description. The goal is to have your resume match the job description as much as possible.

Note: If you included a section for “Additional Work Experience,” highlight your transferable skills that are relevant to the role for which you are applying.

5. Make sure your font size is 11 or above. It’s best to have a clear, easy-to-read resume. Every detail does not need to be included. The cover letter and interviews are your chance to include more details about your past experiences.
