Call for Arts Administrators: NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot Camp
NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot Camp: Professional Development for Arts Administrators
Application Deadline: Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, 12:00 pm EST (Apply Now)
Following a successful launch in 2013, New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) is pleased to announce the second year of the “Emerging Leaders Boot Camp,” a yearlong, free program that provides leadership training for arts administrators. Participants in the inaugural year came from a diverse range of arts organizations serving a wide variety of disciplines and constituents: participating organizations included Brooklyn Arts Council, Center for Book Arts, Dieu Donne, Gibney Dance, Flux Factory, Lincoln Center Institute, Jack, Roundabout Theatre Company, Roulette, Spain Culture New York, The Public Theater, Urban Bush Women, and others.5
“NYFA’s program was the first time that I saw this type of dedication among mid-career arts administrators manifest physically and intellectually in a single space—ultimately bringing unique experiences and perceptions together in an effort to drive our field forward in deep, meaningful, and relevant ways.”
— Will Penrose, Program Manager, Artist Residencies, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council
The Emerging Leaders Boot Camp was developed from NYFA’s “Artist as Entrepreneur” program, which has trained hundreds of artists since 2010. In extending this successful program to administrators, NYFA believes an investment in the cultural infrastructure will benefit the entire field, building stronger connections and shared knowledge between artists and arts administrators.
The program will train 25 arts administrators in the principles of leadership including strategic planning, goal setting, fundraising, and marketing. There will be additional focus on personnel, board development and the importance of artist relationships within these roles. Participants will be given skills that will assist them in their current roles in order to be more effective within their own organization as well as develop training that will help them assume leadership roles in the future.
“NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot Camp is the single most inspiring and vitalizing experience I have had as an arts administrator. I left the program motivated to be a more visionary and democratic manager, equipped with a new set of tools to tackle challenges, empowered to take action and help create positive change and connected to a creative, smart and dedicated community of arts administrators who I can call on for guidance and support. NYFA’s Emerging Leaders Boot Camp is a true gem of a program.”
— Anna Kull, Director of Community Relationships, Lark Play Development Center
