Description: Archivist/Researcher at established Upper East Side gallery specializing in modern and contemporary art.
Primary function:
-Artist research: Thoroughly research artists, including their practice, exhibition history, critical reception, and market value.
-Art historical research: Investigate movements, periods, and styles relevant to the gallery's program and focus, providing contextual information for both exhibitions and non-exhibition related materials.
-Provenance research: Investigate the ownership history of artworks.
Duties and responsibilities:
- Thoroughly research artworks, literature, and exhibition history, write essays, and be familiar using NYC libraries.
-Exhibition support: Assist team by providing research materials, and relevant historical information.
-Cataloguing and documentation: work both with the team and independently to create detail ed documentation of artworks.
-Build and maintain our in-house library.
-Work with gallery’s owner and senior directors/leadership on ad-hoc projects as needed.
-Compile content for client-oriented presentations (quality should be comparable to auction catalogue lot essays)
Professional skills and experience:
Our ideal candidate has some combination of experience cataloguing / working on a catalogue raisonné project / working for an auction house and or gallery in a cataloguing capacity. Copy editing skills are essential.
Education and training:
-BA from a 4-year institution (university or college), major in Art History (preferred)
-MA in Art History (preferred)
-Any library studies experience (preferred)

-Team player, honest, hard-working, detail -oriented, enjoys working both independently and collaboratively
Working conditions:
-This role takes place in person, at our NYC gallery
-Hours M-F (10-6 PM)
-Occasional work conducted outside of business hours
Gallery program:
-4-5 shows a year, 2-3 fairs
