Brooklyn Children’s Museum (BCM) seeks part-time Teaching Artists to facilitate family art programs in BCM’s art studio, ColorLab, and in other parts of the Museum. ColorLab encourages artists of all ages to explore, make and celebrate art. ColorLab programs are rooted in Black cultures, and highlight the work of African American, Afro-Caribbean, and African contemporary artists in Brooklyn and around the world. Teaching Artists will teach and facilitate public programs, and will collaborate with the BCM Education team to design and deliver art-making programs that are process oriented, inclusive and courageous. Candidates should be excited by the opportunity to interpret the ColorLab mission in meaningful and authentic ways for children ages 3-8 years old and their families. Ideal candidates will be outgoing, enjoy meeting and talking with people, and appreciate collaboration. Because of the nature of work with young children and families, flexibility and adaptability are essential qualities for this role.
RESPONSIBILITIES
• Facilitate and teach arts and culture programs in ColorLab and other parts of the Museum.
• Create a welcoming environment for families in ColorLab, greeting children and caregivers on arrival, guiding them through activities, and providing materials and information to help families confidently navigate the space.
• Contribute to the training of Education team members, volunteers, and teen interns in preparation for them to facilitate experiences in ColorLab.
• Co-develop and create teaching manipulatives, signs, models, and other multimedia materials for program if needed.
• Co-develop and design ColorLab and other public program experiences in collaboration with BCM Education department staff.
• Maintain supplies and spaces, and participate in regular cleaning and organizing, including wiping down areas, taking inventory and stocking materials, and tidying before and after workshops.
• Other Education Department and Museum-wide responsibilities as needed.
REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s Degree or experience equivalent and demonstrated love and interest in arts education for children and family audiences.
• At least 4 years of work experience with children in an education, arts, summer camp, after school, museum or other relevant setting
• Exemplary verbal and written communication
• Experience writing lesson plans, developing and delivering programs related to multicultural themes and art
• Desire to interact with young children and families, and commitment to accessible learning for children of all abilities
• Ability to work collaboratively and independently
• Warmth, positive energy and a sincere love of working with youth and their families
• Flexibility, adaptability and openness to constructive feedback
• Knowledge of and interest in Black art, artists and cultures
• Familiarity with Brooklyn and its diverse communities, particularly Central Brooklyn
• Ability to calmly and with enthusiasm, handle crowds.
• Knowledge of object/inquiry-based learning techniques preferred
• Proficient with Macs, PCs, Microsoft Office, Google Apps, and Dropbox
• Ability to stand for long periods of time and to lift up to 45 pounds
