THE CANOPY RESIDENCY - SUMMER 2025 OPEN CALL

The Canopy Residency presented by NYC Crit Club, will grant one artist a free private studio in Chelsea (NYC) for 4-weeks in August to develop a body of work & host studio visits!

Summer 2025 Session Dates

August 4 - 29, 2025 [4 weeks]

Application Period

April 11 - May 25, 2025

$20 app fee (April 11 - April 30)

$25 app fee (May 1 - May 25)

The Canopy Resident will receive:

• 4 weeks at The Canopy Program Studio: a free, large (550 sq. ft.), and private space, with 24/7 access. Located in the heart of Chelsea, NYC. 
• A studio visit with juror + curator Natalia Viera Salgado.
• Open studio event at end of residency.
• Artist feature on The Canopy Program/NYC Crit Club website and Instagram.
• $75 Blick Gift Card for Blick Art Materials.

Please note: This opportunity *does not* include housing or cover travel and food expenses.

Eligibility:

This residency is open to committed artists ages 21+, worldwide. Formal credentials are not required, but a demonstrated dedication to your practice is essential. Enrollment in The Canopy Program is not necessary to apply. The resident must be in NYC throughout the residency AND able to cover all travel costs, lodging and food; as they are not provided.

NYC Crit Club is an artist-run organization based in Brooklyn, NY, and globally via Zoom. Since 2017, it has been offering community, connection, and critique with classes, pop-up shows, workshops, 1-on-1 studio meetings, mentorship intensives, and residency opportunities! NYC Crit Club's sister program, The Canopy Program, is a year-long mentorship program, in which accepted artists work with a Faculty Mentor and an intimate cohort of artist peers to develop their studio practice; offered both virtually (globally via Zoom) and in-person (in Chelsea - NYC).

• Explanation of art background + education
• Brief Statement of Intent on how you would like to use the Canopy Space - explain the need for studio space, what body of work you would like to develop, how often you will be in the space, etc.
• Application Fee ($20 in April, $25 in May)
